Classmarker account create a Google doc with passwords review all keys learned

Today we are going to check to make sure your Classmarker account works (this is the online website we will go tomorrow to take the vocab quiz).  I will give you your username and passwords so you can gain access.

Next we will create a new Google document that will hold all of your usernames and passwords - this way you will have 24/7 access to the usernames and passwords and you wont have to memorize them or carry around papers to help you remember what they are.

After we get that accomplished we will review all of the keys weve learned so far.

Review all keys learned home row H E learn I and R

Today we are going to review all of the keys weve learned so far.  Well do that by working in Word and typing from page 5 in the book.

After spending some time reviewing we will add two more keys to our "repertoire" - the I (R2) and the R (L1).

Generally speaking, if you miss a day when we learn new keys the next day we will spend some time reviewing the new keys we learned.  So for those who are gone you can use the following day, during what would be a review time for everyone else, to learn the new keys. This should be beneficial in that if you miss a day you wont need to come in before school to make up what you missed - you can just use the "review time" to make up learning the new keys.

To start today we will review the O that we learned yesterday.  After reviewing that key we will be learning the T (L1).  Remember, after today you will have already learned 50% of the letters on the keyboard!

Once we get done with the above we are going to take the short time we have left and review.  We are going to use a couple of different websites to break up the monotony and get out of using the book.  Heres the first website:

Modem video review learn left shift and period

We have a couple of housekeeping items to begin with today:

1. Make up times for classwork include: before school (except Wednesdays when I have morning duty), lunch recess, Study Hall (for those not in Band or Choir), or after school (until 3:30).  Plan accordingly if you need to use one of these times.
2. Assessments - if you tell me when you come in the room it makes leaving for the assessment much less a distraction.  Then, when it is time for you to leave you can just quietly get up and go, and Ill know why you are leaving (you wont have to raise your hand and interrupt whatever were doing - you can just go).

The below video will help to explain what a modem is (a modem is one of the vocab words for this week...if its your vocab word and you think you need to change the definition after watching the video then you can change it when you get home tonight).

We will start with a review of all the keys weve learned, but todays review will be a little different from what weve done in the past.  Youll need to think of a word that has at least 4 letters in it that we can type from all the letters we know on the keyboard - Ill explain the rest in class.

When we get done with this we will learn the left shift key (L4) and the period (R3).

First vocab quiz keying review

We will take a few minutes at the beginning of the hour to review the vocab words for this week.  You will want to go to the Wikispaces page for your class to do that (remember that to get to your Wikispaces page you need to go to the vocabulary page on the blog and click on the class hour link). DO NOT GO TO CLASSMARKER UNTIL YOU ARE TOLD TO DO SO!

Once you are done with the quiz you need to open Microsoft Word and type lines 1-10 on 4C at the bottom of page 9 in the book.

When you complete those 10 lines you may go to the following websites and practice:

Microsoft Excel review FA12

As a reminder, if you have definitions for Week 9 vocab (thats this week) you need to make sure to post your definitions to the wiki spaces page no later than tonight to get credit.  If you need help please see me.

Today we are going to review in Microsoft Excel.  Its been almost two weeks since youve done anything with Excel so my guess is most of you have forgotten many of the things we covered before Thanksgiving.  If we get done with our review we will take a look at what you need to know in order to complete FA12, which is also completed using Excel.

Keypad review FA3

As a reminder, your crossword is due by Friday - if you have yours done you can hand it in now.  Also, for those of you who have vocab definitions for next week please make sure to visit the Wiki spaces page outside of class and get your definitions entered.

Today we will review all of the keys on the keypad to start the day.

Once we get done with our review, we will be learning how to add Headers and Footers into a Microsoft Word document.  Generally the Header and Footer area is reserved for such things as page numbers, an authors name, or possibly the Section or Chapter that a page is in (or other possible reasons).  You will be entering information into the header and footer sections of a document and formatting what you enter.

Review Blind assignment

We will start with a review from yesterday - we had very little time to practice the right shift key at the end of the hour so we will spend some time today reviewing that key along with everything else.

Once we spend some time reviewing we will be completing our blind assignment.  This will involve 20 words - I will spell each word to you so you need not worry about being a bad speller - and we will print this out and hand it in for a grade.  I will have several other instructions that I will give you before we start.

As a reminder, if you have vocabulary words that need to be defined for next week they need to be done by next Tuesday night.  Thats still plenty of time...this is just a friendly reminder to get that done.  If you want to come in here at school (outside of class time) then you are welcome to do so, just make sure you let me know when you are coming in.

Napsters New Serivce Review

Napster has recently just come out with a new subscription offering that sounds almost too good to be true. Their website states, “Get 5 MP3 credits and unlimited access to on-demand music with a plan starting at $5 a month.” First time reading this I was optimistic thinking they were giving the user a Zune subscription service for only $5 a month and on top of that allowing you to keep 5 tracks DRM free each month.

Well they do offer the same service that Zune where you can put unlimited songs on your mp3 player while under the subscription, but that is a completely different service called Napster to go and it costs $15 a month which is the same price as Zunes service.

The $5 plan only allows you to stream their 7 million song collection on your desktop pc and only the 5 DRM free track each month are able to go on your ipod/mp3 player. Napster has also included more than 60 commcial-free radio stations, over a 1,000 pre-programmed playlists, and a feature similar to Pandora to create your own playlists.

Overall sounds like a good deal if you listen to music mainly at your computer, but for people who mainly listen to music on your iPod then this is not for you.

Book Review Instant jqGrid

• Today I am going to Review a Book which has been published by Packt Publishing
• The Book is Instant jqGrid
• The Author of this book is Gabriel Manricks

Table of Contents

Who this book is written for ?

• This book is aimed at people who have some knowledge of HTML and JavaScript
• Knowledge of PHP and SQL would also prove to be beneficial
• No prior knowledge of jqGrid is expected

Pros

• I have read this book withing a day.Before reading this book I didnt have any prior experience about jqGrid. But this book gave me all the necessary knowledge which it requires for work with jqGrid for my next App development.
• This is a very concise book (only 58 pages), where directly targeted to the most needed materials about the jqGrid.
• On Installation section it clearly explains how to configure the environment needed for the use of jqGrid with nice screenshots.
• After that On Quick Start section it starts with very simple example about jqGrid and explains all the default configurations of jqGrid.
• I have seen usage of JSON Data generation Tool for generate test data on our data templates,  which it requires for test our sample jqGrid on this section.Its really nice addition for this section.
• When You walk through to the next section,You will feel some kind of advance usage of the jqGrid.
• Author named This section as "Top 7 features you need to know about".
• On this section you will learn  about Formatting data,Adding controls,Editing data,Communicating with jqGrid,Editing data server-side,Searching in jqGrid and Interfacing the API.
• Even though those areas are advance usage of jqGrid,Author explains the theory well with the sample code and final output of those examples with nice screenshots.
• Since the sub section of "Communicating with jqGrid",Author has mainly targeted the jqGid usage for PHP developers.
• When you follow this book, you can collect lots of very useful URLs for get more knowledge about jqGrid world.Other than that Youll have whole chapter reserved for this purpose which named as "People and places you should get to know".
• Source code has been provided with this book also includes a nice read me file which explains how to use codes.I have tested all codes (except PHP Codes) and working fine.

      

Cons

• I personally dont like the cover image of this book.Its totally not matching with the Title of the book.Why because the cover image must implies the Title of the book in some way.When we consider this book, its very easy choice to pick image of nice jqGrid as a cover page image.Author Must think about these things also.
• I would like If Author has included a chapter or subsection for the usage of jqGrid for ASP.net MVC developers as well.Then this book will serve for both worlds (PHP and ASP.net).
• I am not happy with the formatting of the Code blocks.Currently its on Black and White (mono) way. It should be required as color syntax code for better reading experiences.
• On e-Book we cannot access some of the URLs directly by clicking the links.I have found that the problem is when URL goes for the 2nd line of the page,it doesnt work.Need to consider this issue also.
• Its better If Author has provided more Screenshots on "Editing data" Section. Currently Its having lot of text explanation without sufficient screenshots.So itll lead bit boring for continues reading.

• Below mentioned errors came, when I was generating below templates by using JSON Generator Tool
• I have seen below mentioned error on sample code under "Quick start" section
