Improve Speed Of Computer With These Long Term Strategies

Wednesday, November 2, 2016

If you have a day or 2, I highly recommend you to apply these strategies. Unlike other techniques, it might take 1 or 2 days to improve speed of computer. However, these strategies work better than shortcuts that work temporarily.

Step 1: Remove unused programs and files

A computer is like a library. The more books you have in a library, the harder it is to find the book that you want. When you have lots of files and programs installed in your PC, it will take time to find and load as well. By removing programs and files that you don’t use, your computer will run much faster.

To remove programs, you can use the following steps:

Click on “Start” menu
Choose “Settings”
Choose “Control Panel”
Choose “Add or Remove Programs”
Select Programs that you are not using anymore and uninstall or remove it.

To remove the files, just right click the file and delete. After deleting those files, make sure you empty your recycle bin by right clicking on “Recycle Bin” and choose “Empty Recycle Bin”.

Step 2: Move files to external drives

Move seldom or common used files to External Hard Disk or USB Flash Drives. This is also another step to reduce the “books” in your “library”. These tools are getting cheaper nowadays and very affordable. I highly recommend external hard disk because it has more space and not easy to lose it (people around the world are losing more than 1 million of USB flash drives almost every year).

Moving them is quite simple. Just select, cut and paste it on your external hard disk.

Step 3: Cleaning up your desktop

If you are just like me, you probably have tons of files, program shortcuts and folders on your desktop. It is very convenient and I totally understand it. But having lots of stuffs on your desktop will slow down your computer’s performance.

Cleaning up your desktop make require some planning. Create a folder on your desktop and name it as “Work” or “Studies”. You can create 2 or 3 more folders. Next, create more folders in those folders to organize all your files and programs. Keep a habit to organize your files into these folders.

Step 4: Detect errors and repair

If you have been using your computer for months, your hard drive might start to develop errors and bad sectors. These errors will slow down your computer. Fix this errors once a week by following these steps:

Click on “My Computer”
Right click the drive you use (normally Drive C)
Click on “Properties”
Click on the “Tools” tab
Click “Check Now” button
Check the box that says “Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors”
Fix if bad sectors are discovered.

Step 5: Defragment

This is a popular way to improve speed of computer. The steps to defragment are quite simple. Start with clicking on the “Start” menu, choose “All programs”, “Accessories”, “System Tools” and “Disk Defragment”. Click on “Analyze”. Once your computer finish analyzing, click on “Defragment”.

Step 6: Clear hidden Windows errors

About 90% of SLOW computers are cause by hidden Windows error. Cleaning these errors would be hard if done manually. Fortunately, There’re programs such as PC Speed Doctor to do it for you automatically.

Step 7: Overclocking

Overclocking is a way to hack your own hardware and increase their speed. Overclocking is quite technical too. If you are interested in this step, I highly recommend you to learn from Overclock Your CPU. The author teaches how you can increase processors from 1.9GHz to 3.5Ghz.

Makerbot Lecture 3D Printing with David Wells

Wednesday, August 31, 2016

One of the nice things about all this crazy travel this summer is I have gotten to do and see some things that are just not available in Richmond, VA. Last night I got to go to the Makerbot store in NYC to hear a talk about 3-D Printing and Maker spaces.

3-D Printing Filament

The speaker was David Wells from the New York Hall of Science. He is the Manager of Creative Making & Learning - I know, best job title ever.

Last year my computer clubs project was 3-D printing. They fund-raised and bought a PrintrBot tight at the end of the year. I am so excited to see where this takes us next year.

The presentation was a great overview of 3-D printing, some of the recent changes and how to incorporate it into maker spaces. One of the general themes was that engagement with museums tapers off as kids hit their teen years, and these maker spaces are a great way to bring them back in.

Several of the folks working at the Makerspace for the summer were there to show off what they were working on. They are part of Maker Corps Education program. They are officially called explainers, which I might borrow for when we do recruitment in the lab.

Oh, and if you are in the neighborhood NYSCI is the host of the Maker Faire NY this fall on Sept 21 - 22. If you havent been to one you must go. Really - its your homework. Find a Maker Faire near you and get to it. I got to do the one at the Henry Ford Museum last summer in Detroit and it was amazing.

Resources:

  • Interview with David Wells - best summary of the Maker movement Ive seen

  • Maker Corps
  • TinkerCad - Mind to Design in Minutes - This site lets you create the files that the 3-D printer uses
  • Explainer TV from NYSCI - has some fun DIY projects and science explinations

And if you need a story to help inspire you to the power of 3-D printing: 3-D Printer Brings Dexterity To Children With No Fingers.

How does Computer Science fit with No Screens Week

Friday, July 15, 2016

You know how we all have that one Facebook friend, the one that is all granolier than thou about everything? I recently got into one of those discussions about kids and screens.

No screen week is April 29 - May 5 this year.

We are not a big TV family. I spent a good chunk of my childhood in Germany where we had one channel that showed American soap operas, but totally out of order. So TV was never a big thing for me. I just dont like the passive consumption of that much media, especially for small kids.

We currently do not have cable, and the kids watch in short spurts using Netflix. So we usually celebrate no-screens week at our house by turning of Netflix for a week and spending a few more minutes outside with the chickens.

Some things have changes in the last year. My girls are now 10 and 12. They have Kindle Fires and my oldest saved up this fall to buy her own Chromebook this fall. Technically these are all screens...so what to do?

After much discussion we have decided to draw a line between consuming and creating with technology. No Goodluck Charlie or Webkins, but CodeAcademy is OK. For us the kids are outside running around plenty, so more fresh air really isnt the point.

But is does make me think about the role of computer science in our relationships with screens. For too many kids in our country their entire relationship with screens is a passive one. Really, that is the magic of computer science. Like any art, it takes you from being a consumer of a product and puts you on stage as a creator.

And really, that is the point. With computer science, the screen becomes a tool for expression. There is a huge power in that.

Tesla Lands Deal with Toyota Will Build Model S Freemont California Plant

Thursday, April 3, 2014

Tesla CEO Elon Musk confirmed today that it will pass on the opportunity to build their new sedan, the Model S, in Southern California. Rather, they have chosen to purchase the former NUMMI factory in Fremont, California. Bigger news still is that they have also announced a new partnership with Toyota Motors in the collaboration of electric vehicles, parts, and production. Following this agreement, Toyota has purchased $50 million of Tesla’s common stock. Impressive.

Tesla Model S

In the short term, Tesla is purchasing the former NUMMI factory in Fremont, California in order to build the Model S sedan and other "future Tesla vehicles," which should employ around 1,000 workers now to produce around 20,000 cars per year. For those unaware, the NUMMI facility was recently vacated, leaving 4,500 Toyota employees holding pink slips and ginormous frowns; Tesla CEO Elon Musk did confirm, however, that some of those have already been rehired.

End Your Concerns With Pranksters By Doing A Reverse Cell Number Look Up

Monday, March 24, 2014

By Ryon Guttorp

Knowing is half the fight. Once you understand if the company demanding money is real or not you can handle it appropriately. You can block their number or talk to them if it is your neighbor. Many of the time, all it takes is a request from you and your telephone company can obstruct a number and business who require payments are frequently fraudsters. Once you have the realities, you can choose how to manage it.

The majority of individuals feel that without a name you can not learn info on someone so the telephone call keep coming. This use to be the means it worked. Technology the way it is, you can search for home phone subscribers and likewise cell phones. You do not should have a name prior to searching. Simply a telephone number is all it takes. You can then learn the name and address of any telephone number owner, who their supplier is, and a wide variety of other information on that person.

You will then be able to decide exactly what to do to make the phone calls stop when you have all the responses you need. You can show them if you find out it is a bogus phone number to a business you have actually never heard of. If you find out that it is your next-door neighbor calling you, you can block the number from calling you through your phone service provider. You will simply have even more choices on exactly how you can stop the calls.

Just think of the ability that you have to manage those prank calls in the middle of the night that awaken you or your family. It does not matter if all they do is hang up on you without speaking with you. As long as you have a phone with caller ID on it and you can see their telephone number, you can search for that number. You will find out quickly who you are dealing with.

It does not matter if their number is unlisted or not; with reverse cell number lookup you can still learn the required info. You have the right to know who they are if they have actually been calling you at your home or on your cell phone. Whether they live throughout the nation or right next door you can find out who provided their cell phone service which permits them to bother you and your family.

Prank calls commonly come from kids who wish to play tricks on individuals. Various other times it is made use of to terrify you rather than just annoy you. This could be particularly true if the individual on the other end is a heavy breather. If they take place to answer and it is often suggested to do simply that, this can always spook your kids. The prankster does not care exactly what they do to your household. Use the tools you have in order to stop it prior to it ends up being even more of an issue.

There is no damage in discovering exactly what you have to understand. It is definitely legal for you to try and stop the harassment. Nobody however you understands that it ares happening. No one but you can make it end. The only means you will stop it is to learn who is doing it to your household.

For a basic search, there is typically no cost. It is cost-free to discover the name of the person calling you in the majority of situations. , if you need to know more about the person there might be a small fee involved.. Considering your households need to be prank caller complimentary, do you not think that a little fee would be cash well spent if you put it towards a reverse cell number lookup? All it takes is a desire to be free of unknown callers, a phone and a computer number to obtain you on your means to learning who is calling you.

How to Use ValueInjecter with Asp net MVC ViewModel

Saturday, March 22, 2014

What is ValueInjecter ?
  • An Open Source Free product
  • Its a Mapper
  • It lets you define your own convention-based matching algorithms (ValueInjections)
  • In order to match up (inject) Source values to Destination values
  • With the ValueInjecter you inject values from the properties of source into properties of target object using ValueInjections
  • Each ValueInjection has its own conventions of which properties to match and how to transform the value.
  • By Default maps the properties with the Same Name and Same Type
  • But you can override TypesMatch to change this from source to the ones in the target
  •
When To Use ?
  • When we need to Map Domain Model to ViewModel and Vice-versa

How to Download?
  • You can download the "Omu.ValueInjecter.dll" from CodePlex located Here

download

How to Set Reference for above .dll on Your Project ?
  • On your Web Project Add Reference to the "Omu.ValueInjecter.dll"

Add Reference

Lets Try with Simple Example

  • C# , MVC 3 and Visual Studio 2010 has been used.
  • Please Follow an Inline Comments on Code.
  • Simple application with Product Name text box,Retail Price text box and Save button.

Our Simple View Looks Like below

Our Simple View

Our Domain Model Looks like below

 public class Product
    {
        public Product() { Id = Guid.NewGuid() //create Guid as Primary key }

        public Guid Id { get; set; }
        public string ProductName { get; set; }
        public decimal RetailerPrice { get; set; }

        public virtual Provider Provider { get; set; }
    }

Our ViewModel Looks like below

public class ProductViewModel
    {
        public Guid Id { get; set; }

        [Required(ErrorMessage = "required")]
        public string ProductName { get; set; }

        [Required(ErrorMessage = "required")]
        public decimal RetailerPrice { get; set; }

    }

Our Controller Looks like below

        [HttpPost]
        public ActionResult AddProduct(ProductViewModel productViewModel, string providerKey)
        {
            //get provider from repository
            var provider = Repository.GetProvider(providerKey);

            //create Product domain object
            var productObj = new Product();

            //usage of ValueInjecter
            //source object as productViewModel
            //target object as productObj
            //type FilterId for keep target property Id value
            //not overridden from source property Id value (will explain later)
            productObj.InjectFrom<FilterId>(productViewModel);

            //If something missing then map as below
            productObj.Provider = provider;

            if (ModelState.IsValid) //check validation
            {
                //save for repository
                Repository.AddProduct(productObj);
                return RedirectToAction("AddProduct", new { providerKey = providerKey });
            }
            else
            {
                return View(productViewModel);
            }
        }

Our FilterId  Custom Class Looks like below

FilterId  Custom Class

using Omu.ValueInjecter;

namespace PawLoyalty.Web.Areas.Providers.ValueInjections
{
    public class FilterId : LoopValueInjection
    {
        //sourcePropName "Id" will not map to target property name "Id"
        //ie: Keep target property value as it is (not change from mapping)
        protected override bool UseSourceProp(string sourcePropName)
        {
            return sourcePropName  !=  "Id";
        }
    }
}

Why We Need FilterId Custom Class ?

# Its a Custom class inherited from LoopValueInjection class

# On our Domain Model (Product) we have to Initialize property Id of type Guid when creates
   an object (inside a constructor) as a Primary Key.

# So After that generated Id will save on the Database at the end

# When we use productObj.InjectFrom(productViewModel) Line of code (default)
   Without <FilterId> then source object (productViewModel) will override the
   target  objects Id with value {00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000}.

# So for avoid such a situation we have to use FilterId Custom class as above

#  i.e When we need to keep without changing target property Id value (productObj).
          Because it is our Primary key.

What Says Creator of ValueInjecter ? - By Valentin Plamadeala

Another way of doing the FilterId injection would be like this:

Method 1:

public class FilterId : ConventionInjection
 {
   protectedoverride boolMatch(ConventionInfo c)
    {
      returnc.SourceProp.Name != "Id"&& c.SourceProp.Name == c.TargetProp.Name
             && c.SourceProp.Type == c.TargetProp.Type;
    }
 }

Method 2 :

public class IngnoreProps : ConventionInjection
    {
        privatereadonly string[] _ignores;

        publicIngnoreProps()
        {
        }

        publicIngnoreProps(params string[] ignores)
        {
            _ignores = ignores;
        }

        protectedoverride boolMatch(ConventionInfo c)
        {
            return(_ignores == null || !_ignores.Contains(c.SourceProp.Name)) &&
                   c.SourceProp.Name == c.TargetProp.Name
                   && c.SourceProp.Type == c.TargetProp.Type;
        }
    }

and use it like this:

    target.InjectFrom(newIgnoreProps("Id"), source);

Special Thanks

I must put special thanks for Valentin Plamadeala (Creator of ValueInjecter) who gave me a feedback for my Article and also put that on codeplex. Thanks Valentin.I hope you will create lots of this kind of value added components behalf of us in future also.Good Luck.

What are the Features of ValueInjecter ?
  • Its Simple and Very Flexible
  • Its something like mozilla with its plugins, you create ValueInjections and use them
  • There are built-in injections for flattening, unflattering
  • Can use with MVC ,Win-Forms,Web-Forms,Silverlight,WPF and Data Access Situations
  • Can also use ValueInjecter to map from Anonymous and Dynamic objects
  • Valueinjecter has a default injection .InjectFrom() that does the properties with the Same Name and Same Type.
  • For everything else you can Create your Custom Valueinjections with individual mapping logic/rules, more like aspects. e.g. from all properties of Type Foo to all properties of type Bar
                 What is Aspects - Aspect Oriented Programming (AOP) involves breaking down
                                               program logic into distinct parts.

Do you need to Dive Deep ends of  ValueInjecter ?
  • Stackoverflow  Here

Conclusion
  • Above I have showed very simple usage of ValueInjecter Mapper
  • If you need to learn more about ValueInjecter then you have to follow above mentioned Links
  • This mapper is nicely fit with Asp.Net MVC ViewModel developments for very simple to very complex scenarios

I hope this helps to You.Comments and feedback greatly appreciated.

Happy Coding.
